Special Set of Woodcuts – Mary Azarian

We have a special set of woodcuts (see photos) by Mary Azarian new to the shop this week.  They are being offered as a full set of four, featuring the seasons.  These are a nice large size, overall height is 22.5 inches by 18 inches.  They are newly framed and quite beautiful.   Come and see them or call for more information.

MARY AZARIAN:  (born 1940)  Mary is an acclaimed, award-winning woodcut artist and illustrator, and rightly so, her art is fabulous.  Her work encompasses original prints and she has illustrated over 50 books – each better than the previous.

She grew up on a farm near Washington, DC (yes, once there were farms there!) and this sparked her interest in nature.

Her art talents started showing up when she was 10 years old, with a 3” by 4” angel woodcut.  Her only mistake was that she did not know that to put a word on a woodcut, you must reverse the letters, thus NOEL became LEON!

She continued with her art and eventually attended Smith College where she studied printmaking.  After college, she moved to Vermont and lived the farm life with a husband and three sons.  Eventually she decided to become a full time artist.  In the 1970’s she began illustrating children’s books.  She lives in Calais, Vermont and is  still an active artist.  Her art is wonderful and I wish her many more years in art.
